Many people move to walking to work rather than taking public transportation once the weather warms up. While the walk can be an upbeat start to a workday, it can also be excessively dangerous in a busy city if drivers are not more aware of the increased number of people walking and riding to their destinations.

If you are a pedestrian, you can expect drivers to follow certain rules to help them avoid accidents.

Be more visually and mentally aware

It takes a total shift of focus to drive safely once there are pedestrians on the road. While the walker should follow all safety rules, the driver is also responsible for spotting the walker. Drivers can avoid accidents by driving slowly at congested intersections, spotting crosswalks early, and keeping a close eye out for anyone walking or riding a bike. It takes both parties to keep the roads safer for those who choose to walk rather than drive.

Pedestrians always have the right of way

Some pedestrians make bad decisions when walking, such as darting across the street when the signal forbids it. Even when they are not following the rules, it is the driver’s responsibility to always yield to pedestrians and let them pass before moving on through traffic.

Do not pass cars stopped at a crosswalk

If a driver sees another car stopped at a crosswalk, it is illegal for them to pass that car. This is because it is likely that they stopped for a pedestrian, and anyone driving around it may not see the pedestrian coming. If drivers notice a vehicle stopped at a crosswalk or intersection, they should always stop and get a feel for the situation before moving on.

When tragedy strikes

When a car hits a pedestrian, the results can be deadly or cause long-term pain and suffering. If you are a pedestrian who was hit by a motor vehicle, you should meet with an attorney immediately.
