How to Find Out if Someone has Car Insurance

If you’re involved in an auto accident, it can be an extremely stressful experience. It can be even more stressful when the other party caused the accident due to carelessness or recklessness and you find out that they don’t have car insurance.

In California, it’s mandatory for drivers of motor vehicles to carry liability insurance, but that doesn’t mean that there aren’t any drivers out there who don’t carry it. If you’ve been in an accident with another vehicle or if you’ve been the victim of a hit and run, how can you find out if the other driver has car insurance?

Actions to Take Immediately After a Car Accident

When you’re in a car accident, the first thing you need to do is get medical attention for anyone who is injured. Even if there are no injuries, call 911 so that responding officers can document details at the scene of the accident and file a report. Other actions you need to take after an accident include:

  • Move your vehicle out of the way of traffic if it’s safe to do so. If the car isn’t drivable, leave it where it is and get yourself to safety.
  • Exchange name, address, and insurance information with the other driver. In most cases, this is the easiest way to find out if the other driver has insurance. If the other driver leaves the scene or otherwise isn’t cooperative, take down their license plate number and the make, model and color of the vehicle.
  • Obtain statements from any witnesses along with their contact information.
  • Write down details of the accident including location, weather conditions and how the accident happened.

If the accident was a hit and run, try to get the license plate number of the vehicle and a description of it, and take this information to the police so you can file a report.

Forgetting to Obtain Insurance Information

Sometimes people are too shaken up after an accident to remember what they need to do. If it seems like the accident wasn’t very serious, you may even think that it’s not important to obtain insurance information from the other driver. Since it’s not always easy to tell if you may have a long-term injury, you should always get as much information as you can from the other party involved in an accident.

If you neglected to obtain the needed information at the scene of the accident or if you were the victim of a hit and run, you should be able to find out if the other party has insurance as long as you were able to obtain their license plate number. The law enforcement officer who responded to the scene of the accident should be able to help you if you have this information. Your own insurance company will also investigate the accident in order to determine who was at fault and will try to find out the needed information.

Dealing with Uncooperative Drivers

If you’ve been injured in an accident caused by someone else’s negligence or carelessness and they are refusing to cooperate, or if you were the victim of a hit and run accident, it’s a good idea to obtain legal advice from an expert in the field of personal injury law.
